Visit Znojmo - Deep Red Wines & Dark Brown Cliffs BOOK TOUR
Znojmo has more than enough of the extraordinary to keep a person happy for a day...
This royal castle & town built above the Dyje river is too often overlooked on the way to Vienna. With a 13th century castle built by Ottakar I, hobbit-like sklepy (wine-cellars) built into the hills, vertiginous roads winding up and down dark cliffs, and a rich history of invention and intrigue, Znojmo is a perfect place to spend a few hours or a few days. Few people do - maybe because they take the main road that bypasses the gorgeous city center.
If people pause, they will find a town shaking off the communist government and rediscovering its dynastic history. They’ll discover one of the nation’s greatest paintings in St. Catherine’s chapel, and small producers making the best red wines in the Czech Republic. This all exists on cliffs reminiscent of France’s Dordogne.
The cultural history of this city makes it a real discovery too. The world’s first electronic instrument was built here around 1753 (!) as well as the first fully-functioning lightening rod. In short, Znojmo has more than enough to keep a person active, learning, and growing for a few days. Its proximity to Vienna (90 minutes) makes this a perfect stop traveling to or from Prague.
