Ticket to the New World

by Eva Heyd  |  ISBN: 978-80-270-4574-7  |  Type: Paperback

This is a collection of biographic essays written about several of the most talented artists, architects, writers, singers, musicians, designers, and actors who managed to escape the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during the second world war. Many of them became a driving force behind the effort to support the Czech community in America, giving performaces in towns such as New york, Chicago, Cicero and Cleveland. Others, left their mark in clothing design, building, and fine arts. In each case, these Czechs had a significant impact on American culture as well. In some cases the stories are quite bittersweet, when considering how much they had to sacrifice.
